Have you ever been the target of a phishing scam? Did you recognize it as a scam right away? What tipped you off? Blog about your experiences with malware or phishing attempts.

Yes, I once received an email from my mortgage company requesting some additional information regarding my online banking account for a loan.

As I did not have an online banking account nor did I apply for a loan, I immediately called my mortgage company to check on the email they sent.

They informed me clearly, "Do not reply or provide any information."

The company had not sent the email even though the logo and letterhead information was exactly as it usually appeared on written correspondence.

I confirmed with the company that no accounts (lines of credit) were open in my name.

As this lesson instructed, I now know this was an exxample of "phishing" and the tips outlined in this lesson are helpful to alert Internet users to scams.

I liked eCollege Guide because I just had a question this month from a customer with a disabled child seeking to pursue education from home online.

Instrucables looked interesting as we get customer requests for how to do or make __ and the information is sometimes tricky to find. It is especially helpful to be able to direct someone online if the school project is due tomorrow.

Postivivity Blog is a winner and would be great connected to our Staff Intranet so we can check it regularly.

Lastly, Connexions seems to offer more in depth knowledge and looks like a source worth a closer look. I'm going to pursue the topic "music theory" using their resources as a trial.

Orange Seed & Orlando Memory

In your blog, describe how you see programs like The Orange Seed and Orlando Memory as being important to yourself and how they are important to the Library.

The Orange Seed program is important to the Library because it involves innovation. The Orange County Library System strives for continuous innovation and the Orange Seed provides an open forum for all staff to share ideas. It is important to me to see the improvements in our library system.

Orlando Memory is an important project for the Library and the community because it is a window to history. The archives posted can be accessed by students, families, genealogists and community leaders. It is worth promoting to our guests and are residents as a glimpse into the character and development of the area. This is important to me as a possible source for answering local history reference questions. It is a plus to our customers to have the ease of accessing this type of material online.

I liked the approach of news as it happens including typos and the international focus of the site. For example, at 2:46 pm, 11/24/08, the lead story was Germany's dissatisfaction with the Christian Democratic government.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story on Segway inventor Kaman and his energy efficient island of CT.
This could easily work as a source to inspire students assigned "news essays" who don't actually want to read a newspaper and would prefer a topic of interest to them which may not appear in the top news headlines. For extra credit the student might add their views online.

We often have customers seeking to become an author or get a book published. For many customers, the publishing side of the process is not self evident, particularly the new online opportunities in self publishing which famous authors have used for years. ("Remembrance of Things Past" was originally self published.) A source such as Lulu with the "Writer's Market" and books on how to get published will answer this common customer request.

What part of the mission statement do I connect with? The second sentence for me expresses what I do everyday - connect people to ideas, information and technology.

How do I see us creating a well-informed, well-connected community? By continuing to offer virtual resources which go beyond the public library such as Expanded Academic and eBooks. The interest level of our users today is often highly specialized whether it is the elementary school project or the home hobbyist. As many people will tell - anyone can go on the Internet. When they contact the library they've already done that and are seeking more information. Introducing the customer to sources which can be used for detailed research and cited as a book or scholarly publication is a critical part of creating a well-informed community.

Offering language learning resources and events of interest to everyone fosters a well connected community.

Open Source

As technology makes information more open source, how do you see our role, as a library, in the future?

The challenge of sustaining end users for resources is a point as open source serves more the purpose of the developer.

Libraries work with students and documentation is a critcal factor which may be lacking in open source as noted by some even elementary schools redirecting students away from Wikipedia to credible documented sources from libraries.

Would it make life easier in the IS Department? Would the open source software be as available with care & support as proprietary software?

Critical thinking / analysis for choosing the best source for the customer, open or other, continues as point for future discussion.

Health, Wellness and Technology

What I liked and how I think it will help Me:

Wow! I really liked this Lesson. In fact, it runs a close tie with the lesson on music/copyright info. for me in useful content.

After looking at the Nike gadget I started thinking how much fun it would be to run a marathon. It may be just what I need to give a boost to my running. (It sure beats using the car odometer to track mileage.)

The Nutrition data was quite detailed and I'm a label reader. I immediately put the site in my favorites and plan to use it often. I like the pyramid analysis.

Great that you connected this lesson with our own Health & Wellness Program, too.

I hope there might be some future lessons on health - as we all know Americans need all the help we can get. :)

Wikis – Wikis are much like blogs except that all visitors have the ability to add, edit or delete information. Seems sort of weird doesn’t it? The goal is to use a wiki to create a collaborative piece of knowledge. If all of mankind is separated by 6 degrees, well then, all of man’s knowledge is only 6 separations away. Not so silly is it? Take a look at Wikipedia and search for your own piece of profound wisdom.How do these topics connect?

Wikis and Blogs are both communication venues which can change easily. They also are sources which must be verified for accurate and credible information. This is why college professors do not accept "Wikipedia" as a reference source and, in fact, some colleges have banned the use of "Wikipedia" for research.

Library Use for Blogging

Blogging is a bit like talk radio. It is an opportunity for people to communicate on a variety of topics with varying degress of accuracy. Many people enjoying voicing their thoughts and opinions in an open format which allows others to comment on what they think. There is also a degree of popularity in posting your opinion on a blog so you can tell someone you're online and here is my blog - read my post. Blogging is another way of sharing information. The information may or may not be accurate.

Yes I like online learning when the tone of the creator is intelligent and fun like you.Why or why not? Why because it is convenient and afficient. Without mentioning names, have you offered to help anyone. I haven't offered to help anyone - only because they didn't seem to need help. I did witness someone else offering to help someone both parties are in other departments. Has someone helped you? No, but my assistant manager offered to help with any questions I might have. Are you part of a team working on this together? A team working on this project as individuals. How is that working out? Great.It is a big help to have the prearranged scheduling to do this. Did you reach out to another location? Well, yes, in cyberspace. Realize that this is all part of a larger program called Life.exe. In Life.exe, we all have to work together, and when we do, we all benefit. Sort of Hippy logic, I know, but it is something I believe in. Thank you!

My favorite library technlogy is eBooks. The speed at which one can access details in specialized areas of interest is useful. Specifically, the ability to search content in seconds is excellent for librarians directing customers to access publications for research projects, presentations and homework assignments.

The application that I liked best and tell is the SEOmoz - lulu.comI like their style and graphic designs. I did not personally share the program with anyone. But the QL team talked about various aspects of it. I was not surprised to find an OCLS presence on Myspace or Youtube. I knew about them already, but thanks for highlighting them. The Web 2.0 video reminded me of one of the "Harold and the Purple Crayon" movings and an old horror film I saw when I was about five, both of which I liked.

Share - Create a blog entry in response to this question: How are you going to use your MP3 player?Thank you for asking. I have been thinking about this from the beginning and have still not decided yet. One possibility is to download audio books to use for demonstrating at school talks and other outreach visits how our Net Library service works. Having access to the NET Library service is great feature to promote! The portability of an MP3 player is helpful for those outreach visits where computer access is limited. Demonstrating to kids and other potential customers how they can listen to books from the library is exciting. At one outreach visit I had at Arbor Ridge School a teen was listening to a download of Charles Dickens from our website when we met. (He didn't know about the content search feature for eBooks, though, a helpful tool for high school research paper.)
